RTX 4090 vs. RX 7900 XT – Gaming Performance

Nvidia and AMD are gearing up to release their high-end flagship GPUs in the coming days. Already many prominent leakers have shared fascinating information on RTX 4090 vs RX 7900 XT. And going by what we know thus far, both products are excellent uplifts over their predecessors.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 is part of Nvidia’s Next-gen GPU series, the ADA Lovelace RTX 4090. On the other hand, the RX 7900 XT (aka Navi 31) is part of AMD’s RDNA 3 lineup.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 Performance and Specs

RTX 4090

Nvidia’s RTX 4090 hits remarkably high clock speeds, even breaking past 3GHz in League of Legends. But that’s merely a tip of this GPU’s iceberg; going by leaked information, this GPU promises stellar performance.

The ADA-powered graphics card promises to offer groundbreaking performance thanks to its array of impressive features, including:

  • An AD102 graphics processor built on the 4nm process.
  • DirectX 12 Ultimate support for hardware raytracing and variable-rate shading, among other things
  • 512 texture mapping units, 16384 shading units, 176 ROPs, and 512 tensor cores to increase machine learning speed
  • 128 raytracing acceleration cores and 24GB GDDR6X memory on a 384-bit memory interface.
  • 1 X 16-pin power connector delivers 450W by default with a triple-slot cooling solution.

In spite of its high-power demands, the performance of Nvidia’s RTX 4090 should be spectacular so much as to shake up the high-spec GPU scene significantly.

As for the gaming performance, if we compare RTX 4090 to RTX 3090Ti, it is two times faster in games like Microsoft Flight Simulator and Warhammer 40,000 Darktide and more than four times faster in Cyberpunk 2077 thanks to new RT overdrive.

With this in mind, we can be certain that the RTX 4090 can produce maximal FPS in most Esports titles like CS:GO, LOL, and Dota 2.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT Performance and Specs

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT is the next-generation RDNA 3 “Navi 31” flagship GPU. The graphic card is expected to prove that AMD can actually outmatch or at least match the performance of the GeForce RTX lineup.

This new GPU is the ultimate package for AMD’s gaming audience; it has been uplifted with numerous incredible innovations such as Smart Access Memory, FSR, and Infinity Cache. You can, therefore, experience a fluid and smooth gaming experience with all the benefits of DirectX 12 Ultimate, Ray Tracing, and visual upscales, among others.

Already confirmed is that RDNA 3 GPUs will have the following key features:

  • Advanced Chiplet Packaging and a 5nm Process Node to increase performance per watt.
  • A new, rearchitected Compute Unit that delivers enhanced raytracing capabilities.
  • An Optimized Graphics Pipeline which allows for clock speeds of over 3GHz
  • A Next-Gen 192MB AMD Infinity Cache
  • 256-wide WGPS and 128 CUs delivering 48 WGPs across 12 Shader Arrays and 6 Shader Engines
  • A rich Software ecosystem including AV1 support, next-gen FSR 3.0 tech, and new WMMA Instructions to allow AI-Learning.

Clearly, this graphics card is set to be among the best AMD graphics cards, delivering impeccable performance in an oversaturated GPU market.

Release Dates and Pricing

AMD has teased the launch of the RX 7900 XT graphics in early, possibly November 3rd, 2022.

The new monster GPU for Nvidia, the RTX 4090, will be unveiled on October 12th, 2022.

As you might expect, these flagship GPUs are for folks with deep pockets. The RTX 4090 is expected to retail at around $1,599 MSRP, while the RX 7900 XT will cost between $1000 and $1500 MSRP.

RTX 4090 vs RX 7900 XT Comparison

All signs point to Nvidia’s RTX 4090 and AMD’s RX 7900 XT being the most powerful GPUs ever. However, we are yet to see which of the two will shape up to be the true king in League of Legends.

We can confidently say that the RX 7900 XT is much more efficient than the RTX 4090 in terms of power consumption.

RTX 4090 is an extremely power-hungry GPU. In fact, early leaks mention RTX 4090 might consume almost double the power used by the RX 7900 XT.

Information on the power usage of the RX 7900 XT is scanty. However, it’s generally theorized that the total board power requirement here will be in the 350 watts range.

The RTX 4090 uses an AD102 GPU core rumored to require 450Watts by default and as much as 660 watts in OC mode. The extreme power draw comes from attempts by the Nvidia camp to push their new GPUs to their limits.

High power requirements make cooling these graphics cards quite difficult. Therefore, your old-school PCI Express power connectors won’t do the trick here—you’ll need four 8-pin cables. Nevertheless, both GPUs may come with the latest PCI Express 5.0 auxiliary power connectors. This latest connector has the capacity to supply up to 600 watts.

So, for RTX 4090 vs. RX 7900 XT, the Navi-based RX 7900 XT delivers almost similar performance at much less power demand than Nvidia’s RTX 4090.

Nvidia seems to have taken a brute-force approach when developing the upcoming RTX 4090 GPU. In testing the waters of their power limits, we can expect excellent performance from Nvidia’s flagship GPU.

AMD’s upcoming graphics card, the RX 7900 XT, matches Nvidia’s RTX 3090Ti performance while outclassing its energy efficiency.
