4 Common Interview Questions for Entry-Level Sales Positions

A good job interview can significantly improve your chances of landing the job. While you might look great on paper, if you cannot communicate effectively during an interview, you may be overlooked in the hiring process, especially in a sales role where communication is so crucial.

To make sure you crush your interview and land the job, you must go into it prepared. Understand what the role you’re applying for entails and prepare some questions to ask your interviewer. Do your research about the company and spend some time thinking about why you want to work there and why they would be crazy not to hire you.

Before going into an interview, you should also take the time to think about your answers to some common questions. Whether you’re interviewing at a sales recruitment company or at the sales company itself, here are four questions you should be prepared to be asked during the interview.

1. Describe Your Experience

With this question, it’s important to keep in mind that your interviewer has already seen your resume. They know where you’ve worked and for how long, so don’t waste time walking them through your history. Instead, use this question to share the tangible skills you learned in each role. Every question you’re asked in an interview should be seen as an opportunity to prove your skillset through concrete examples.

If you don’t have any sales experience, highlight the transferrable skills you’ve learned working in other industries. For example, if you worked as a tutor, you could mention that this opportunity taught you how to rephrase information to reach the desired audience.

2. Situational Questions

Interviewers will often ask you a situational question. This could include:

  • How would you sell me this product? For this question, they may give you one of the company’s products or something simple like a pencil or a water bottle. You must then give them your sales pitch for that product.
  • If a customer calls you and wants to return a product because they are dissatisfied, how would you handle it?

3. Why Do You Want to Work for Our Company?

Now is the time to prove that you’ve done your research on the company. Maybe you’ve read that they have a great work culture. Maybe you’re genuinely passionate about the product or service they sell. Whatever your why may be, now is the time to share it.

Again, try to connect this question back to personal experience. For example, you could say that you felt as though the team was disconnected at your past place of employment. This may have made it hard to achieve a common goal, so you are excited by the opportunity to work for a very connected company.

4. What Motivates You?

The sales industry can be extremely difficult. Salespeople have to deal with a lot of rejection and must pick themselves back up continually. Having a clear motivation and purpose is the best way to stay resilient and showing that to your interview is an excellent way of proving that you have what it takes to work in this industry.
